EA and Nike sponsors concerned about rape complaints

Sportswear maker Nike and video game maker Electronic Arts said Thursday that they were concerned about allegations of rape against Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the best football players in the world.

On Tuesday, the 33-year-old athlete denied the alleged rape charges against him by a woman who had sued him in a Nevada court.

"We are deeply concerned about the worrying allegations and will continue to monitor the situation closely," said Nike in a statement released to Reuters.

Nike has been working with Ronaldo since 2003, and in 2016 announced a $ 1 billion life contract, according to Forbes magazine.

Electronic Arts featured Ronaldo on the cover of the FIFA series of his EA Sports magazine for two years.

"We have seen the disturbing report detailing the allegations against Cristiano Ronaldo," an EA spokesman said in an email to Reuters.

"We are watching the situation closely because we expect the athletes and the ambassadors of the cover to behave in a manner consistent with the values ​​of EA," the company said.

Kathryn Mayorga sued Ronaldo in court in a county court in Clark County, Nev., Alleging that he had raped her in 2009 in a sequel to a penthouse hotel in Las Vegas.

The player stated that his conscience was clear and that he would wait for the results of any investigation.

"I strongly deny the charges against me, rape is an abominable crime that goes against everything I am and what I believe in," said the world-renowned athlete in a tweet to his 75 million followers.

Ronaldo was transferred from the Real Madrid football team to Juventus, Italian champion, this summer, for 100 million euros. Juventus broke the silence on the situation Wednesday afternoon on Twitter, fully supporting Ronaldo.

"Cristiano Ronaldo has demonstrated in recent months his great professionalism and dedication, which are appreciated by everyone at Juventus," tweeted the team.

"The events that date back nearly 10 years do not change this view, which is shared by all who have come into contact with this great champion," said Juventus.
