THE SCORE OF THE BOX
TAMPA – What are the Eagles options to the wide receiver? Why was the second 75-tia TD Tampa worse than the first? Where was the defensive line?
Here are my 10 observations of the 27-21 loss of the Eagles Sunday to the Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium.
1. The 75-yard TD of DeSean Jackson to open the game was bad. The 75-yard TD in the tight second quarter O.J. Howard was worse. Because the offense had finally put the brakes on the game and the Eagles needed the defense to keep up, but they immediately proved right Ronald Darby by placing a tackle that would have limited the gain to 20 meters. Malcolm Jenkins can not fight on the field thanks to a block Chris Godwin. The first time in Eagles history, they allowed two 75-yard TDs in the first period. Embarrassing. The Eagles finally had late results in the game and moved closer, but it's virtually impossible to come back after giving up 75 yards in half.
2. I know everyone is going to scream at the Eagles to get out Dez Bryant, Josh Gordon, Plaxico, Joey Galloway, T.O. or whatever other wide and washed out Pro Bowl receiver is available. But I do not see it. Alshon Jeffery will be back for either the Colts or the Titans. The Eagles do not need a headache. They do not have ceiling space. It only takes a month to acclimatize a new catcher to attack, coaches, playbook and quarterbacks. At this point, the Eagles are best placed to stay with what they have until Jeffery returns.
3. I liked the effort and the fight that the Eagles showed after losing 20 points. They fought on both sides of the ball and made things interesting. They did not always play well or play smartly, but they never stopped playing hard. It's something that you always look for when a team becomes embarrassed. How do they react? Do they just give up and say, "It's not our day?" Or do they forget the score and keep fighting?
4. Ryan Fitzpatrick finished 27 for 33 for 402 yards and four touchdowns. He is 35, with his seventh team and his fifth in the last seven years. I love the Eagles high school, but it's inexcusable to let Ryan Fitzpatrick do it for you. Jalen Mills is a talented child, but he must learn not to bite in the double movement. Darby must still be more consistent. Even Jenkins had a hard day on Sunday. You can not let Ryan Fitzpatrick do that to you.
5. Likewise, I thought the Eagles defensive line would dominate. Just take over. This pass against a quarter-mate of 35 years was virtually nonexistent. Aside from a bag at the start of the Fletcher Cox, the Eagles had very little pressure, and when you give Fitzpatrick time, he's really good. The D-line is the heart of this team, and they must be better.
6. I will never understand Nick Foles. Already. He can destroy Bill Belichick's defense with 100 million spectators on the biggest stage of the sport or it may seem that he has never played the game before. And then he can have games like Sunday where he's both these guys. I can not understand it and I will never do it. His last numbers look good (35 for 48, 334 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT, 99.5 for the passers-by), but honestly, he never gave the team a chance to win. Carson must return soon.
7. How difficult is Nelson Agholor? It was exaggerated when the Foles threw that fourth infernal pass near the goal line in the fourth quarter – the room where Corey Clement was also injured – and he was dropped a few minutes later, and he does not leave the field and not only makes a miraculous contact soon after, but jumps over a photographer near the end zone. Talented guy. Hard guy. So happy that they did not give up after 2016.
8. It's impossible to see DeSean Jackson running while making pieces without wondering … HELL where do you think? "Really sad.
9. Clement is really very good. As really good. He does not have many chances, but he always plays games. He was 6 for 30 with a TD of 15 yards and 5 for 55 receiving Sunday. It's 85 yards on 11 keys. He only does good things every time he touches football. And he has a real nose for the end zone. If Jay Ajayi is not here next year, I'm fine with Clement.
ten. The Eagles had to lose a match sooner or later. They have been 18-2 in their last 20 games, they have tried to win. They met a hot QB and they had enough failures and penalties on both sides of the ball to lose an ugly Sunday. Now the challenge is how they react. It's a different team than the one who won the Super Bowl. Many new guys. The good news is that the Redskins have lost at home and the Cowboys or Giants will be 0-2 later tonight. The Eagles lost an ugly Sunday in Tampa, but it's still a good team. They are back on Sunday at the Colts, and I'll be surprised if they do not bounce deep.
