Eagles sets up a workout with Jeremy Maclin

Jordan Matthews is not Jerry Rice or Randy Moss, but despite what irrational fans have tweeted me tonight, he is not afraid.

If you have not heard, the Eagles brought Matthews back to the NovaCare compound on Tuesday for a training session and could sign him for a contract because of their disastrous situation with the receiver. (see the article).

No, Matthews is not ideal for this Eagles attack. He has his faults as a player. He drops too many passes. His main position is in the slot, where Nelson Agholor plays. He does not threaten to blow up a defense. And he is injured in the thigh.

It is not ideal either not to recover Alshon Jeffery or to fracture Mike Wallace's fibula after seven shots during the second week. But here we are.

There is simply not a ton of options right now. It's almost late September, after all.

So as a short-term solution to play in five days?

As long as he is healthy, Matthews could probably help.

In less than five days, the Eagles will start at Lincoln Financial Field to face the Colts and, after relinquishing DeAndre Carter, they have only three big receivers in good health in Agholor, Kamar Aiken and Shelton Gibson.

They just need someone who can come in and be ready to play on short notice. They need someone who knows the offense. Matthews would fit this bill and could be a better option than the three players from the training team or Markus Wheaton, who was on the active list not long ago. He has at least one connection with his friend Carson Wentz.

I do not understand everything Matthews hates. Of course, he has his limitations, but he was an extremely productive receiver when he was in Philadelphia. In three years with the Eagles, he captured 225 passes for 2,673 yards and 19 touchdowns. Moss, Odell Beckham Jr., Mike Evans, Larry Fitzgerald, A.J. Green and DeAndre Hopkins.

No, Matthews is not as good as any of them. And no, it's not a long-term solution at the wide receiver level.

But if the Eagles are looking to bring somebody to play this Sunday, Matthews would be a good choice.
