NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Marcus Mariota hit Corey Davis with a 10-yard touchdown pass just before the end of extra time, and the Tennessee Titans defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 26-23 on Sunday for their best start since 2013.
The Titans were trailing by 14 in the third quarter before rallying the leader. They were also led 23-23 in overtime before returning behind Mariota, who made his first start since the start of the season with a wounded elbow, 344 yards and two touchdowns, while continuing the scoring.
In the winning race, the Titans converted three quarter-finals, one for each penalty. Mariota hit Taywan Taylor with a 19-yard fourth and 15th pass and Mariota found Dion Lewis wide open in the fourth and second inning for 17 yards. Facing the third goal and the end of the time, Mariota found Davis for the first TD receiver of the regular season.
The Titans (3-1) also offered four bags. Rookie Harold Landry earned his first goal and also eliminated Carson Wentz from the ball in the first minute of the fourth quarter, marking Ryan Matters second-half goal.
The Eagles (2-2) had the chance to win at the end of regulation time and overtime, but they were forced to settle for a pair of Jake Elliott goals.
Philadelphia had three chances in the Tennessee 20 to win after DeAndre Carter returned a 42-yard punt at the Titans 39 with a 1:41 win, but Wentz pitched incomplete on the first and third runs. Elliott kicked 30 yards to force overtime.
In overtime, the Eagles scored the first goal and 10 in Tennessee 17, but had to settle for a 37-yard effort by Elliott for the lead.
The Eagles led 10-3 at half-time and 17-3 after a savage strike that devoured more than 7 minutes in the third quarter before Wentz hit receiver Alshon Jeffery with a 16-yard touchdown.
Mariota finally got the Titans' attack after only two touchdowns in the first three games. He completed a 75-yard run with a 2-yard run to draw Tennessee 17-17 at the end of the third period, and he hit Tajae Sharpe with an 11-yard pass for the fourth quarter.
The Eagles beat Tennessee 432-397 and Wentz threw 348 yards. Jeffery finished with 105 yards and a touchdown, and Zach Ertz had 10 catches for 112 yards.
