Researchers from the University of Eastern Finland recently conducted a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition to determine the link between the risk of cardiac arrest and fermented and non-fermented dairy products. fermented. Fermented dairy products include buttermilk, sour cream and cheese, and unfermented dairy products include milk.

For their assessment, they examined about 2,000 men between 1984 and 1989, assessing their lifestyle and eating habits. They then divided the subjects into four groups based on their consumption of dairy products and followed them after about 20 years.

After analyzing the results, they found that 472 men had suffered a cardiovascular disease, such as a heart attack.

After further investigation, they found that consumers with the highest consumption of fermented dairy products, containing less than 3.5% fat, had a 26% lower risk of heart attack than those with the lowest consumption. .

"Acidic milk was the most widely used low-fat fermented milk product. Consumption of fermented dairy products high in fat, such as cheese, was not associated with the risk of coronary heart disease, "said the team in a statement.

In addition, they stated that a very high intake of unfermented dairy products was associated with an increased risk of heart attacks. They indicated that milk was the most used product in this category and defined high consumption as an average milk consumption of 0.9 liters per day.

"The new study provides additional evidence on the health benefits of fermented versus unfermented dairy products," the analysts said.

Although they do not yet understand why there is a relationship between fermented dairy products and a reduced risk of heart attack, they hypothesize that compounds formed during the fermentation process could be a factor.
