Houston defensive lineman Ed Oliver missed his fourth straight game Thursday night, a win against Tulane. In the first half of this game, Major Coach Applewhite asked Oliver to remove a black jacket reserved for players dressed to play. the two then had in a screaming match enter the 48-14 victory half of the Cougars on the green wave.
On Friday night, both parties issued statements on the incident.
"Ed is a passionate human being and that's why he's the best player in the country," said Applewhite. "Last night was not revealing of its character and it was an exciting time within our program, and we can, and we will, learn from this situation as we progress together."
Oliver – who did not return to the lineup in the second half – took responsibility for his role and is committed to ending the season in force with the Cougars.
"Last night is not what I am," he said. "I am very passionate about football and last night there was a misunderstanding I was caught in a moment of emotion I have the utmost respect for the coach Applewhite and I appreciate the support of the Applewhite coach and his teammates.I love my brothers, my team and my city and I look forward to going forward with Come on, Coogs! "

Oliver, a junior, announced this spring that it would be his last season with the program. The Houston native, who measures 6-foot-3 and 292 pounds, is ranked 2nd in the preliminary category of 2019 according to CBS Sports' draft outlook.
The Cougars will travel to Memphis on Friday to conclude the 2018 regular season.
