Houston defensive tackle Ed Oliver did not play in the second half of the Cougars' 52-31 loss to Memphis, which would send the Tigers to the AAC vs. UCF championship game. It's no coincidence that Memphis managed to run the ball all day against the Houston defense. Two halfbacks from Memphis, including star Darrell Henderson, eclipsed 100 yards on the floor as the Tigers racked up 401 yards and six touchdowns. Oliver, who was suffering from a bruised and persistent right knee, was visibly emotional on the sidelines while he was sitting with his injury.
Houston coach, Major Applewhite, said after the match that Oliver's knee had begun to bother him again. Oliver first had his right knee bruised at the end of October against the Navy and has virtually missed his last four games recovering. Although he tried to knee against SMU earlier this month, Applewhite said Oliver had suffered a setback in that game. Friday, Oliver aggravated his knee.
Oliver announced before the start of the season that he would declare himself for the NFL 2019 draft. It remains to be seen whether he plays or not in the upcoming Houston match. Oliver says that he intends to play. However, he clearly wanted to be on the ground against Memphis. Oliver and Applewhite also made a very public outburst just before halftime against Tulane during the 12th week, to find out if Oliver could wear a coat provided by the team though he was not playing. Applewhite and Oliver subsequently issued statements claiming that they had put the situation behind them.
