The National Weather Service confirmed an EF1 tornado in New Canaan on Tuesday as violent storms spread throughout the state. Officials also confirmed EF1 tornadoes near New Castle, New York and Stony Point, New York and EF0 tornado in Ronkonkoma, New York.
According to the NWS report, the tornado occurred near the intersection of Weed Street and Marshal Ridge Road. The tornado had estimated the maximum wind speed at 100 mph.
This is the seventh tornado in Connecticut this year, making it one of the most active tornado years ever recorded. The state averages 1.5 tornadoes a year.
The storms caused floods and damage in parts of the state. Norwalk reported wires and poles down and New Canaan had several trees down, including some on Highway 15 heading north which closed the road. Fairfield and Wilton reported similar problems.
Floods have also been reported in the state, resulting in road closures. In Norwalk, Highway 1 was under threat near Scribner Avenue.
In Hartford, fire officials warned motorists to stay away from Granby Street due to severe flooding.

In Waterford, a lightning bolt destroyed a power line and caused a fire that shut down part of the Waterford Parkway South.
The tornado warning was issued for Fairfield County, but was canceled due to weakening storms.
A tornado warning means that you must go to safety immediately. An underground or windowless space is the best possible place in a tornado.
Serious storm warnings were issued Tuesday afternoon in the counties of Hartford, Fairfield, Tolland and Windham, but have since expired.
Weather conditions are improving considerably as drier air is operating in this state on Wednesday.
