The Ministry of Health of El Paso has reported the fourth case of West Nile Virus (WNV) this year.
The last case concerns a man under 20 who lives in the northeast of El Paso. It has no underlying medical condition.
"The current weather conditions, with the rain and warm temperatures, create an ideal situation to increase mosquito breeding," said Deputy Director of the Department of Public Health, Bruce Parsons. "Whereas it only takes a teaspoon of stagnant water to allow reproduction, we need all members of our community to flip and toss all the objects that collect the water from rain outside their homes. "
In addition to tip and toss, residents are encouraged to report large areas of stagnant water that may produce mosquitoes to the Environmental Services Department by dialing 3-1-1. Residents can "fight the bite" by reducing the spread of mosquito-borne diseases by using these methods of prevention:
• DEET – Use insect repellents with DEET on the outside.
• DRESS – Wear long sleeves, long pants and socks outdoors.
• DUSK and DAWN – Although mosquitoes associated with other diseases such as Zika may be active throughout the day; residents should take extra precautions during mosquito bite times (from dusk to dawn) or consider avoiding outdoor activities during these times.
• DRAIN (DRAIN) – Drain stagnant water from flower pots, gutters, buckets, pool covers, pet water dishes and bird baths.
Last year, 14 West Nile human cases were confirmed in El Paso and the most recent deaths associated with the disease were two deaths in 2015.
