In a tweet, Saturday, SpaceX's founder, Elon Musk, announced that a "drastic change" was going to take place for the design of the Big Falcon Rocket (BFR), which is currently underway to attempt to get the job done. go to Mars.
Musk left out the details of his plan, simply stating that "SpaceX no longer plans to upgrade the second floor of Falcon 9 for reuse" and that it "would speed up the BFR instead." Musk called the new design "very exciting" and "deliciously counterintuitive".
Earlier in November, Musk announced that "the second stage of Falcon 9 would be upgraded to look like a BFR mini-ship" to test components for the WCR. His last tweet indicates that the company is fully interested in this plan and abandons the plans previously announced to improve the second floor of the Falcon 9 so that it can be reused.
In September, Musk announced that Yusaku Maezawa, a billionaire and Japanese art collector, would be the first passenger on the WCR. With eight artists, Maezaqa intends to carry out a one-week mission titled "#dearMoon".
The mission would launch the larger BFR plan to visit Mars and contribute to its colonization. Musk says he wants to launch an unmanned mission on Mars by 2022 and a human mission by 2024.
Previously, the design of the BFR included a spacecraft 180 feet above a 230-foot rocket booster that promised to lift up to 150 tons of freight and carry up to 100 passengers on Mars. It's hard to know how much this will change with Musk's new design.
The news is consistent with previous reports that many SpaceX resources would be reallocated to the WCR by the end of 2019.
