The 12 buildings of the Flint School, Michigan, as well as the school administration headquarters, will be equipped with ultraviolet water filtration systems, thanks to a donation of technology billionaire Elon Musk and his Musk Foundation.
The Flint school system announced the Thursday donation via Twitter, which even received a response from Musk himself. "You're welcome," said Musk. "I hope to do more to help in the future."
Musk is engaged in the Flint water crisis in July after a Twitter user pushed it there. "I heard a group of people say that it was absolutely not possible to provide clean water in Flint, Michigan," said @DylanSheaMusic.
Musk responded six minutes later by pledging to "fund water repairs in all Flint homes whose water contamination exceeds FDA levels".
"No kidding," added the CEOs of SpaceX and Tesla.
Flint's water crisis dates back to 2014, when the city transferred the source of its drinking water from the Detroit Water and Sewer Department (DWSD), fed by Lake Huron and the Detroit River, to Flint River.
Subsequent tests showed E. coli bacteria, high levels of lead and even disinfection byproducts in Flint River water. More than a year later, the city returned to the water distribution of the DWSD. In 2016, President Barack Obama declared state of emergency in Flint, which allows the Federal Emergency Management Agency to provide resources to the region.
The city has long been replacing all lead pipes in Flint homes, but residents' confidence in the state and city may not return for a long time.
