"I have a design for an airplane," said Elon Musk in a large-scale interview for the Joe Rogan Experience Live podcast broadcast Thursday night on YouTube. The interview included both men drinking whiskey and steaming the grass.
Musk thinks that his electric plane would be better than current planes, able to take off and land vertically (VTOL) and fly in supersonic at high altitude. The CEO of Tesla and Space X, however, admitted that it was not a priority for him. "Electric cars are important, solar energy is important, storing stationary energy is important," said Musk. "These things are far more important than creating an electric supersonic VTOL."
The spliff was introduced by Rogan long after the discussion of the plane. "It's legal, is not it?" Musk asked before taking a single puff.
The discussion on the plane starts at 1:15:08, the desire to accelerate the switch to sustainable energy starts at 1:19:16 and smoking at 2:10:00.
"I've thought a lot about it, not bad," Musk said about the design of the electric jet, although he admits he's only discussed it with friends and girlfriends. "The thing," said Musk, "is that you have to make the transition to level flight. The thing you use for vertical take-off and landing is not suitable for high-speed flights.
"The interesting thing about an electric plane is that you want to go as high as you can, but you need some energy density in the battery because you have to defeat the gravitational potential energy. Once you have overcome the gravitational potential energy and are at high altitude, the energy you use in cruising is very low and you can then recover much of your gravitational potential energy as you descend. So, you really do not need fuel.
However, Musk quickly recognized that he had more important things on his plate that prevented him from continuing to design his electric plane. "The electric plane is not needed right now," said Musk. "Electric cars are important, solar energy is important, stationary energy storage is important. These things are much more important than the creation of supersonic electric VTOLs.
Musk then sighed heavily and became visibly moved by describing the need to adopt sustainable energies more quickly.
"We are really playing crazy games with the atmosphere and the oceans. We take large amounts of carbon from the underground depths and put them in the atmosphere, that's crazy. We should not do that. It is very dangerous. We should accelerate the transition to sustainable energy. I mean, the strange thing is that we will obviously run out of oil in the long run. There is only too much oil that we can extract and burn. It makes perfect sense, we need to have a sustainable transportation and energy infrastructure in the long run. So we know that's the end point, we know it. So why do this crazy experiment where we take trillions of tons of carbon from the basement and put it in the atmosphere and the oceans. This is a crazy experience. This is the most stupid experience in human history. Why do we do this, it's crazy. "
"So, are we fucked?" Rogan asks later. "No, we are not fucked," replied Musk. "But the dynamics of sustainable energy is too slow."
Elon Musk has a long history of floating ideas like Hyperloops and tunnels long before they become official projects under his command. Of course, Musk also says a lot of things that never happen.
