Emergency departments test drugs for addiction | New Hampshire News

MANCHESTER, NH (AP) – Two hospitals in New Hampshire are participating in a project to introduce medically assisted treatment for patients with substance use disorders in emergency departments, instead of simply direct them to external resources.

The study, dubbed ED Connect, is conducted in three northeastern locations: Manchester Catholic Medical Center, Claremont Valley Regional Hospital, and Bellevue Hospital in New York.

Dr. William Goodman, Chief Medical Officer at CMC, said this approach makes sense as many patients with substance use disorders use the emergency department as the primary source of health care. He says that these emergency room visits provide a narrow and important window for providing help.

The study aims to determine whether busy emergency rooms can screen patients, start treatment and refer them for ongoing support.
