The Wisconsin Legislature's Joint Committee on the Review of Administrative Rules decided to suspend certain provisions of an emergency rule that would restrict the transportation of deer carcasses in counties affected by the CWD at its October 1 meeting .
As a result, the amendments to the Carcass Transportation Regulations contained in the Initial Emergency Regulations, approved by the Natural Resources Council at its meeting on August 8, are not in effect as previously announced. The 2018 deer hunting regulations web page and restrictions on the movement of deer carcasses have been updated to reflect this change and revert to the 2017 rules on carcass transportation.
It is important to note that it remains illegal to transport whole carcasses of wild deer and some parts of these carcasses from MDC-affected counties to areas outside the MDC-affected counties. unless such carcasses or parts are transported to a neighboring county. a licensed taxidermist or licensed meat processor within 72 hours of registration of the deer. This restriction applies to all counties affected by the CWD, including those where the ban on baiting and feeding is no longer in effect.
The proper disposal of deer carcasses is an effective preventive measure to reduce the risk of disease transmission. Although the emergency rule has been suspended, Ministry of Natural Resources staff continue to encourage hunters who harvest a deer in a DOC-affected county to voluntarily keep this carcass in the harvesting county or to restrict movement. in a contaminated county, unless the hunter transports the carcass to a licensed taxidermist, a meat processor or a landfill through conventional waste disposal systems, such as curbside recycling.
