Overall, the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards were rather sad. John Legend had already achieved EGOT status before the show aired. The speeches of acceptance were short and decidedly apolitical. And hosts Michael Che and Colin Jost gave a lukewarm monologue that did not stir up controversy Saturday Night Live Update hosts of the weekend.
Another surprising fact is that almost everyone who won has drawn a thank you list rather than using the platform to question issues such as racism, sexism and homophobia in Hollywood. Last year, host Stephen Colbert followed Trump with an issue on the theme of Handmaid's Tale; Lena Waithe and Donald Glover have marked history with their Emmy victories and used their speeches to openly talk about issues of sexuality and race; and the stars of Big Little Lies have spent their time on stage to address the issues of domestic violence and assault.
But overall, the show was just boring. However, there were some moments of surprise that drew the attention of viewers, including a surprise proposal in the middle of the ceremony. Here are the best and the worst moments of the Emmys 2018.

Best: the uncomfortable reaction of Chrissy Teigen
Chrissy Teigen won the best shot of the night. In the opening monologue, Che joked about Laurie Metcalfe. She was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a comedy for Roseanne, despite the fact that the controversy surrounded the star of the canceled show, Roseanne Barr.
"Do you know how much you have to be an actress to be nominated for Roseanne now? asked Michael Che. It's like naming a cop for a BET Award. It does not happen. It would be strange.
The camera cut to Teigen who grimaced and curled up in her seat while her husband Legend smiled and clapped, unaware of the embarrassment of the situation.

Glover has won several awards as a star and creator of Atlanta Monday evening. Had the show been won, the public could have heard a speech by one of Glover's most troubling characters, Teddy Perkins. The actor seems to have applied prosthetics to recreate the character that Glover played in white on the series.
But viewers saw Glover in the crowd a few rewards later, without prosthetics. Maybe it was a different person who imitated the character. The real tragedy is that we will never know exactly what Glover had planned for his acceptance speech, because all the clues indicate that it is a barn burner.

Best: Betty White owes her due
The Emmys recognized Betty White, who asked aloud that she still works in the industry at 96. The television legend has won eight Emmys and has been nominated 24 times. "It's amazing that you're in such a long career and that people always support you," she says. "I wish they did that at home."
Although White was only on stage for about five minutes, his jokes proved more amusing than the opening monologue.

Best: This surprise wedding proposal
Academy Director Glenn Weiss won an Emmy and took his time to propose to his girlfriend, Jan Svendsen. You can always count on a room filled with actors to deliver dramatic reactions, and nominees and Emmy presenters deliver.
Leslie Jones has completely lost it in the driveway. Benedict Cumberbatch, gay, applauded. And Claire Foy started crying.

Best: acceptance speech by Thandie Newton
Thandie Newton, stunned, followed Che's advice earlier in the series and thanked God at the beginning of his speech: "I do not even believe in God, but I will thank her tonight. as she swore in disbelief at her victory for the best supporting actress in Westworld.

Worst: The abuse of Maya Rudolph and Fred Armisen
The normally funny people Maya Rudolph and Fred Armisen have been embarked on an incredibly boring piece throughout the series. The two sometimes took the floor to answer questions asked by Che and Jost about the Emmys story.
The duo was doomed from the start. No element should depend on making the boring information even more boring. The comedians answered questions such as "What is the ball Emmy holds?" With replicas like "His famous ball of ribbons". Maya free!

Better: Americans finally won

The worst: the lack of diversity in the show
The evening opened with a jokey number on how Hollywood had solved its diversity problem. Keenan Thompson and Kate McKinnon have interpreted the story of Sandra Oh as the first Asian actor to be nominated for best actress in a drama: "There was none, now there is one. And we're done! "
But the awards ceremony seemed to take this attitude of self-congratulation to simply recognize the problem without solving it. The winners of Monday night were extremely white: the popular show Atlanta was completely closed, as was Kill the day before star Sandra Oh. Che even pointed out during the show that the first six winners were all white.
Specifically, presenters and winners totally avoided anything that could be interpreted as political or controversial. James Corden made a #EmmysSoWhite joke in the middle of the evening, which looked worthy of a coup – if only because this year they were there.
