Emmys 2018: Unsuspecting fans still ask Issa Rae to talk about Lawrence

Issa Rae sees you, #LawrenceHive!

The author and creator of HBO's hit series Unsafe says the fans still want to talk to him about Lawrence Walker, the ex-boyfriend of his character.

"They always want to talk about Lawrence," says Rae, 33, at PeopleTV. "They always want to talk about relationships on this show."

Dedicated fans of the show are so obsessed with Lawrence, played by Jay Ellis, that #LawrenceHive – a nod to Beyoncé's #BeyHive – frequently features Twitter trends in every episode. When the news of season 3 announced that his character would not be back in the series, the fans launched a petition imploring Rae to write to him.

Rae, who is nominated for the first time this year to the actress in a comedy, says her enthusiasm keeps her, as well as the writers, on their guard.

"It's so cool that people are talking about this show," she says. "They dissect every facet. I know that conversations are going on so that we can not tell our stories, but I'm good at closing it in the writers' room.

The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Michael Che and Colin Jost, will be broadcast live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Monday at 8pm. AND on NBC.
