In a rather stormy evening at the Emmys, Glenn Weiss delivered a moment that left most people away and applauding.
He proposed to his girlfriend, Jan Svendsen, live television after winning an Emmy.
Mr. Weiss, who has amassed more than a dozen Emmys, has won for an exceptional staging for a special variety for his work on the most recent Oscars. He is a veteran of Hollywood-centered TV events, having staged events as diverse as the Kennedy Center Honors and the Macy's 4th of July Spectacular.
He began his speech by paying homage to his mother, who he said died two weeks ago.
"Part of my heart is broken. I do not think it will be fixed, "said Weiss, 57.
He added: "Mom always thought to find the sun in things and she loved my girlfriend Jan."

"Jan, you are the ray of sunshine in my life," he continued. "And mom was right, never let go of your sun. Wondering why I do not like calling you my girlfriend? Because I want to call my wife.
Ms. Svendsen's jaw dropped – like many in the hearing – and she said yes even before asking the question. The crowd started applauding as Mrs. Svendsen, Charity Network Creative Director, visited the scene. Mr. Weiss told him when he arrived: "This is the ring my father put on my mother's finger 67 years ago. And to my brothers and sisters, I did not drag it. Dad knows I have it, O.K.
He knelt down and said, "Jan, I want to put this ring that my mother fingered in front of all these people and in front of my mother and your parents who were looking upstairs." Do you want to marry me? "
Of course, she said yes and both walked with an Emmy and a partnership for life.
S addressing reporters after the show, Mr. Weiss said the couple had met in 2001 while they were working together and that they had been together for 10 years. He said that he had not told anyone about his plans except his father, because he was the guardian of his mother's ring.
"Now that's where it belongs," Weiss said.
Emmys producers, like viewers, were in the dark. Mr. Weiss said that he was planning to warn them, but the show's director, Hamish Hamilton, was named in the same category, so that would have been a little embarrassing, he said. .
Svendsen, who was the director of marketing for the Tony Awards, said she was used to attending many shows, so she did not expect anything unusual – certainly not a proposal.
"I really hoped that he was going to devote this price to his mother," she said. "He did it, and still others."
Daniel Victor contributed to the report.
