England will be completely free of cigarettes after 2050, according to a new study.
Some regions will go "smoke-free" earlier than others because experts are calling for more action to help smokers make their habit.
Bristol, Wokingham and York will be the first non-smoking areas in England in the mid-2020s, but residents of North Lincolnshire, Derby and Cheshire are expected to continue smoking after 2050.
The research, conducted by Frontier Economics and commissioned by Philip Morris Limited, revealed large differences in the expected rate of decline in different parts of the country, but predicts that nearly one quarter of England will have quit by 2030.
The disadvantaged regions have a higher smoking rate, according to the study, with the three regions having the highest smoking rate being Kingston upon Hull, Blackpool and North Lincolnshire.

Researchers suggest that the number of smokers using NHS tobacco control services and the switch to e-cigarettes needs to increase if communities want to move faster without smoke.
Mark MacGregor, Director of UK Corporate Affairs at PML, said: "Our company is committed to not smoking as quickly as possible and to stop selling cigarettes. What this research reveals are the huge variations in the decline of smoking in different parts of the country.

"We want to play our part by working with local businesses, retailers and councils in areas where smoking rates are highest.
"It will not be easy to stop smokers in these areas.
"One of the keys to success will be to make sure they understand that there are more options than ever before to permanently quit smoking."

The new figures are detailed on a website launched by PML – www.lastsmoke.co.uk – which presents ONS data for ZIP code areas via an interactive tool.
The Last Smoke website also includes other proposals that could speed up the end of cigarettes in the country.
These include more independent research on smoking alternatives, targeted government campaigns through schools, and social media to stop smoking and fight the illicit cigarette trade by taking tougher action against criminal gangs. .
