A major new climate study in Nature has garnered worldwide media attention for discovering that the oceans are warming much faster than previously thought. But the researchers canceled this conclusion after a man in the UK blogged about the flaws discovered in the newspaper.
Just two weeks after publication, the reviewers revised their paper and now conclude that the oceans are warming rapidly, but at the same rate as the other measures.
A co-author of the study took responsibility for the error. "I accept responsibility for these omissions because my role was to ensure that the details of the measurements are well understood and taken up by the co-authors," wrote the co-author of the study, Ralph Keeling, in an explanation of the revision.

The mistake was discovered for the first time by Nic Lewis, a retired British math graduate from the University of Cambridge who reads science articles for pleasure. He has also written some articles on climatology.
"I've always liked to understand the world and check if the research done by people seemed logical to me. Once I find something that seems to me wrong, I like to get to the bottom of things, "Lewis told Fox News.
Lewis said the incident should serve as a telling tale.

"I think this shows that the fact that a study is peer-reviewed and published by a leading newspaper gives very little assurance that its results are valid," Lewis said.
"I was slightly surprised that neither the peer reviewers nor the editor had spotted what seemed to me an obvious red flag on page 1 of the document," he added.
Lewis said the critics who endorsed this document may have looked for fewer mistakes as the finding was consistent with the typical belief that global warming is an extreme crisis.

But everyone involved, including Lewis, agrees that human-caused greenhouse gas emissions warm the oceans.
"People should not feel that the errors in this document cast doubt on the warming of the ocean's interior. This is clearly or entirely due to human emissions of greenhouse gases, "Lewis said.
The co-author of the study who took responsibility for the mistake also argued this point.

"Evidence of ocean warming continues to be supported by millions of ocean temperature readings by the Argo international sensor network," Keeling told Fox News.
The Argo sensor network includes nearly 4,000 floats around the world that observe the ocean. The study by Keeling and his coauthors attempted to estimate ocean temperature in a totally different way – "by using measurements of atmospheric oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) … which increase as the ocean heats up and releases gases.
Keeling said that such a study still had some value.
