European markets open lower as Khashoggi crisis sinks sentiment

The market is paying close attention to the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in a consulate in Turkey earlier this month. President Donald Trump said Monday that he was not satisfied with what he had heard from Saudi Arabia as international pressure intensified to explain exactly what who arrived in Khashoggi.

The Turkish authorities claimed that Khashoggi had been murdered by a team of Saudi agents inside the consulate and would have evidence to prove it. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman denied any involvement.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he would publish information on the investigation in a speech delivered later in the session. Investors will likely consider any announcement regarding Khashoggi, as any signs of instability in Saudi Arabia – the world's largest oil exporter and major investor in the financial markets – could have broad repercussions.

In Asia, the broadest MSCI share index for the Asia Pacific region, excluding Japan, fell by more than 1.3% on Tuesday. This comes after the winning season has pissed off Wall Street in the previous session.
