SAINT-YVELINES-EN-QUENTIN, France – The 12 players that the United States took to France for the Ryder Cup represented his best hope of winning here in a quarter of a century. But highly favored Americans are not only playing worse than expected. They may be routed.
After Europe finished Friday with five points in a row, it started Saturday morning by winning the top three and leading 8-4 before the afternoon session. Only a win by Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas over Ian Poulter and Jon Rahm, 2 & 1, prevented Europe from winning all four matches in the second consecutive session.
The first team to 14 1/2 points wins, but as champion, the United States would keep the trophy in case of a tie. The United States has not won a Ryder Cup in Europe since 1993.
On a cold and windy morning in the suburbs of Paris, the United States started the day with a ragged golf course. The bullets found the rough, the bullets found water and some even found fairways. Some putts of feasible birdies did not fall. When the United States played well, Europe played better.
