COLUMBIA – Governor Henry McMaster lifts the evacuation order from several Lowcountry counties, allowing some evacuees to return home by noon Saturday as Florence continues to crawl along the northeastern part of the state.

McMaster announced that people can return to Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester Counties, as well as Edisto Beach, the only part of Colleton County that was ordered to leave.

The call was launched after the deterioration of Hurricane Florence in a tropical storm.

The storm "no longer poses an imminent threat to the life, health, safety or well-being" of the residents of these counties, reads McMaster's decree.

The counties of Georgetown and Horry remain under the evacuation order which ordered the people to leave Tuesday noon. About 441,000 people actually left the coast, about 320,000 people.

The governor asks returning residents to be patient because there will be traffic jams, blocked roads or detours. Do not drive around barricades or use emergency lanes for first responders, he said.

In South Carolina, more than 170,000 homes and businesses were without electricity on Saturday morning.

The current may not be restored for several days, McMaster said.

No decision has yet been made on the opening of schools or government offices. These calls will come after local officials have assessed the potential damage and shelter needs.

The last decree of the governor does not prevent local officials from setting up a curfew.
