Several New England schools have once again ranked at the top of the US Universities and World Report rankings, with some seniority spots on the lists and others ranked equally.
For the eighth consecutive year, Princeton University was ranked first in the national university category, leaving Harvard University in second place, according to the ranking released Monday.
With an overall score of 96, Princeton was the only university with a score of 100 – Harvard ranks third in terms of graduation and retention, and the university also had a 96% graduation rate.

Yale University is again ranked third, while the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which was fifth in the past year, has risen to third place this year. MIT has also been ranked first among the best engineering programs, with the highest engineering degree being a PhD.
Other familiar Massachusetts schools were included in the national list. Tufts University finished 27th, Brandeis University 35th, Boston College tied for 38th and Boston University and Northeastern University tied for 42nd and 44th respectively. The University of Massachusetts also saw a tie to five in 70th place.
In the category of best national colleges of liberal arts, Williams College in western Massachusetts, won again the first place, a title he has held for 16 years in a row.
. The school was the only college on the list with an overall score of 100. She obtained first place for graduation and retention rates and achieved a graduation rate of 94%.
Williams was also ranked first among schools offering the best value for money.
The major national liberal arts colleges have a strong representation in New England. Amherst College again came in second and Wellesley College again tied for third place.
Bowdoin College dropped in the rankings this year, tied for fifth place after qualifying for the third year. Meanwhile, Middlebury College went from a tie to sixth place last year to a tie in fifth place this year.
The annual lists rate schools according to 15 different areas of academic excellence, assign overall scores to schools, and rank them accordingly.
The US News and World Report has also produced an exclusive web this year with the top colleges based entirely on high school counselors' rankings. In this list for national universities, Harvard, MIT and Yale all occupy first place alongside Princeton and Stanford University in California.
For the national liberal arts colleges, high school councilors ranked Amherst, Bowdoin and Williams in fourth place, alongside Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania and Harvey Mudd College in California. The United States Naval Academy, the Military Academy, and the Air Force Academy rank first, second, and third, respectively.
