MEXICO (Sputnik) – The submarine was located in mid-November at a depth of 907 meters. It was found distorted and with signs of explosion.
The Argentinian daily La Nacion reported, citing the draft report of the experts of the commission of the Ministry of Defense of the country, that the first fire could have occurred on board, near the electric batteries front, November 14, 2017 – a day before the wreck. Then, the water penetrated the batteries through the ventilation system, which caused a new fire and an explosion.
After that, San Juan surfaced and the crew did repairs while it was dark and the weather was bad. Then he went under water again in order to proceed to the Mar del Plata base of the country's navy. On November 5, the crew reported the incident and continued their underwater journey.
Experts say that after that, either a new fire has started on board, or the partially extinguished fire has resumed. As a result, the crew lost control of the vessel and it began to sink. Having reached critical depth, the submarine could have been crushed by a column of water, which, according to experts, was the reason for the wreckage.
