"Earlier in the day, a server configuration caused intermittent problems in all applications, creating a degraded experience for users. The problem has since been solved, we have returned 100% for everyone and we are sorry for any inconvenience, "a Facebook spokesman told ABC News in a statement sent by email.

The failure occurs at a particularly sensitive time for the company. Many companies are using Facebook and Instagram to promote Black Friday's sales, some of which have already begun. The retail sector took a sluggish turn on the stock market on Wednesday, which may make Facebook's corporate partners particularly concerned about the outage.

In addition, Facebook is still on the defensive after the publication in the New York Times of a blockbuster that explained how the company reacted to increased surveillance and security breaches of Russian accounts before the 2016 US presidential election. .

The report revealed that the company had used a Republican-related consulting firm, Definers Public Affairs, to sow media stories that attacked Facebook's competitors and critics, including Apple, Google, Tim Cook and George Soros. Facebook sent the company back on the day of the publication of the story.

The CEO of the company, Mark Zuckerberg, is even mocked this weekend with "Saturday Night Live".

According to the Facebook site for developers, the "degraded performance" began around 6 am Eastern time.
