A barrier fell at the Global Citizen Festival in Central Park, causing panic among the crowd.

Thousands of people fled the scene and many of them squatted in the midst of unfounded fears of gunfire.

Chris Martin from Coldplay came on the stage to calm the crowd.

"No one is trying to hurt anyone," Martin said. "Are you all safe, okay?"

He approached the microphone of a New York police officer who said a barrier had fallen.

The show continued a few minutes later with Cynthia Erivo singing "A bridge over troubled water". Then the show was stopped again while the police replaced the security fence.

the NYPD tweeted"There was no shooting at the #GlobalCitizenFestival, the sound was a fallen barrier."

Seven people were slightly injured in the tumult, said Hugh Evans, CEO of the festival.

Approximately 60,000 people completed the Great Lawn for Global Citizen Festival. Among the performers were Cardi B, The Weeknd and Janet Jackson.
