Police respond to reports of an armed man at Topsail High School in Hampstead, North Carolina. Previous reports of gunshots seem to have been caused by a faulty water heater on the school's roof.

Pender schools have lifted the blockade on other campuses in the region. Topsail Elementary, Topsail Middle and Topsail High all remain locked up, he said.
"Pender County schools thank everyone for their safety and thank the local emergency services for its immediate response," the body said.

Collins has now confirmed that the malfunction of the equipment on the roof of the school was the cause of the reports of active shooters. "There is no active shooter," Collins told reporters. "It's a faulty water heater."
He explained that the series of malfunctions "looked like an AR-15 that goes off".

WRAL has been talking to Tom Collins, director of Pender County Emergency Management, who said there would be no casualties. Collins said the police were inside the building and that she was investigating information that the incident would involve a "malfunction of the equipment on the roof of the gym".

Several law enforcement agencies are on the scene, according to the Port City Daily. This includes New Hanover County Sheriff's Assistants, officers from the Wilmington Police Department, UNCW Campus Police, and Pender County Sheriff's Assistants. Hanover County's new Sherriff office said its MPs reacted after learning the incident on the news.

Pender Schools says he "takes every precaution to ensure the safety of students and staff".
The body explained: "At this point, all campuses in the eastern part of the county are locked.Buses are organized at Lowe's Foods in front of Topsail Elementary.All staff members of Topsail Elementary, Topsail Middle and Topsail High must show up at Lowe's Food. "
Pender Schools has asked all parents considering driving their children to school not to do so at this time.

The parent of a child attending high school Topsail High School told WWAY that he had received a call from the school district telling him that all schools located in the eastern part of Pender County were locked.

Police in North Carolina responded to reports of an active shooter at Topsail High School in the Hampstead community, according to local media outlets.
The call was received around 6:30 am local time on Friday. Police said police were on the scene, according to the WTVD-TV channel. Captain James Rowell of the Pender County Sheriff's Office said the scene was still active. Rowell said there were currently no injuries reported. Dispatchers told the WCCB that agents were securing the perimeter.
The high school was locked up in May after a student brought a semi-automatic rifle to campus, claiming that he had done so to end the rumor that a school would have been pulled. Another student was arrested with three knives, the Wilmington Star-News reported. The school was established in 1975.
