Week 7 begins the worst period of the fantastic season. We lose the Packers, Seahawks, Raiders and Steelers this week and four other teams in Week 8. Weeks 9 and 11 bring us six teams each on leave. This means that sports teams are about to become much more useful. Looking at the Raiders Sunday, I started asking myself if there were any that deserved to be retained during their next leave.
Marshawn Lynch is the only Raider that is worth keeping out of the way.
To say that Jon Gruden's experience is a failure may be premature. But that surely looks like this day. The Raiders have won a game (at home against the Browns in overtime) and have just suffered their worst loss of the season Sunday. Things are not better, especially for Fantasy.
More fantasy
It's a team that has scored more than 20 points just once this season. Derek Carr finishes a lot of passes, but most are less than 5 meters from the line of scrimmage. Amari Cooper and Jordy Nelson each had two excellent games and four failures. Jared Cook has been as inconsistent as ever. This is an unprofitable fault that leaves no chance to the way the goals are achieved. Do not hesitate to drop them.
Verdict: Do not believe it.
Listen, if you play in a league of 10 teams, I understand. But most of you do not have one. The Raiders return from their start with a game against the Colts of Indianapolis, a defense that Sam Darnold just shaved. It is possible that the week off is the time needed for Carr and the company to get on track and take advantage of a series of fights including the Colts, 49ers, Chargers and the Chiefs.
That does not mean you have to keep them all either. Get Derek Carr as far as possible from your list. There is no reason to carry backup QBs the following week. You can even give up on Jared Cook if it means keeping a better player on your bench this week. I would just make an effort to do it after the bye. But keep Cooper and Nelson for the moment. Better days should be coming.
You can trust Adrian Peterson until he succumbs to an injury.
Can we take a moment to appreciate what Adrian Peterson just did? A week after getting dislocated from the shoulder (and finding him himself), the 33-year-old had amassed 97 yards in 17 carries against a very good defense of the Panthers. It was his third time this season with over 90 rushing yards, and his effort was largely the reason Washington managed to hold on and win this game.
Verdict: Believe it.
Despite his age and injuries, Peterson is number 14 in the PPR leagues this season. It seems pretty incredible. Consider now that his team has already had a break and missed half of a game because of an injury. How did he do that? The volume is largely due to Washington playing very well in defense most of the season. When Peterson played, he is number 1 and he should be treated as such. Well almost.
Grade 6
The truth is that I am terrified of a possible failure, and I would gladly trade Peterson against a No. 2 running back or receiver under the right circumstances. But it's a tough player to manage, so if it's part of your squad and it's active, it needs to be part of your starting lineup.
The two tight ends Buccaneers are bootable.
Throughout last week we boasted Cameron Brate is the preferred target of the red zone at Jameis Winston. We talked about how O.J. Howard was on the 2 to 4 week plateau and Brate would excel in his absence. Howard then recovered by surprise and both played Sunday. Not surprisingly, they both scored.
Winston threw over 40 percent of his career touchdowns for tight ends, and more than 50% since the beginning of 2017. This is the ideal position for two tight ends to flourish, and Howard and Brate are capable of it. Start both with confidence.
Verdict: Do not believe it.
We were lucky with Brate this week. Howard is pretty clearly the leading dog here. Even in his first match, he Underutilized Brate from 52% to 33%. Howard caught his four targets for 62 yards. Brate did not see another look after his touchdown early. You must absolutely start Howard with confidence, but Brate is more of a game of desperation than you hope to score.
Russell Wilson is back as a Fantasy Quarterback # 1.
Boy, I look stupid. I doubted Russell Wilson, and he responded with six touchdowns in his next two games. Wilson has now surpassed 25 Fantasy points three times this year and each of his last two. All he needed was to bring Doug Baldwin back to his full potential. He is a must-hold by his bye and a must-start thereafter. Congratulations if you have never abandoned it.
Verdict: Do not believe it.
I do not feel stupid at all. I feel justified. I spent most of the summer worrying about what Brian Schottenheimer would do with respect to this offense. Although he succeeded, he did exactly what I feared. Wilson has not thrown more than 26 assists in a match since the second week. He passed 230 passing yards once a year. The worst thing is that it does not run either, with no more than 21 rushing yards in a game. I would sell Wilson just about any useful article I could get. There is no way to continue in this way with this volume.
Mike Evans will be a No. 2 catcher with Jameis Winston.
Let's go back to the Bucs for a moment, because it was not quite positive for the passing game. Evans saw only five targets in a match that saw Winston fly in all areas. Chris Godwin and Desean Jackson each had nine targets each. This was the case for Winston last year, when he traded the ball between several receivers. It will be very difficult for Evans to be among the top 12 players with all the weapons they have in Tampa.
Verdict: Believe it.
Winston has always been better for the backs and the tight ends, but worse for the receivers, and that does not seem to change. We have already talked about Howard and Brate in the red zone, but both Peyton Barber and Ronald Jones have reached a peak in terms of goals from the first start of Winston. You should not panic about Evans; it will still be a top-of-the-line receiver # 2, but you may not get what you paid for.
