The landscape of running was shaken across the country Friday – Dave Richard reacted to Carlos Hyde's trade here – and the Raiders were shocked by their week off. NFL Network reported Friday that we had seen Marshawn Lynch for the last time at least next month – and maybe even a little longer – after an MRI revealed a serious injury to the groin.
The exact details of the injury are not yet known to the public, but the report states that Lynch will be away for at least a month. However, the injured reserve is a "strong possibility", according to Ian Rapoport. It is not known if Lynch will require surgery, but if he goes, it will end his season. Even if he is designated to return, this would keep him at least until the 15th week.
Even in the lower part of the timeline, Lynch misses several games. Even considering week 7 of the team, missing a month would prevent Lynch from staying in the 11th or 12th week. It's on the edge of the regular Fantasy season, which means you'll have a hard decision to make. The good news is that you will not have to make this decision for several days, so see if we discover something more concrete before the waivers are performed on Tuesday for week 8. As for the appearance of the Raiders racing game, here is the expected result and what is most likely to happen. The more likely outcome, however, probably sees Richard staying in his current role, with Doug Martin getting into Lynch's role. Martin was criticized by the coaching staff during the off-season and accumulated 27 assists against 11 in Richard, but he produced 99 yards with less. It's continuing with a theme for Martin, who has not even averaged 3.0 yards per race since 2015, he was certainly excellent in 2015, totaling 1,402 yards and six touchdowns, but since then he has not counted anything.
So far this season, Lynch has played 50.5% of Raiders' offensive shots, Richard's 35.7% and Martin's 13.6%. Richard could see a slightly bigger role, but I guess half of the team's offensive shots going to Lynch will be transferred to Martin. At least at the beginning. If he can find a spark of his former Pro Bowl form, the Raiders can not miss the beat without Lynch; otherwise, Richard has the opportunity to prove that he is much more than a communications specialist.
The Raiders will not be surprised by this news, with more than a week to develop a game plan before the 8th week against the Colts. This is not a bad landing point for running, but expectations should be low until Martin proves otherwise.
Martin will be one of the main targets for waivers in all fantasy leagues as a result of this news next week, and should probably be added in all formats depending on the desirability of the workload ahead. Richard also deserves to be added, especially in PPR formats. He may remain primarily a specialist in short-term pass fixing, but if Martin continues to struggle, he will have the opportunity to play a bigger role.
