Monday, the The Eagles learned that runner Jay Ajayi had torn his ACL and that he would miss the rest of the season.
You might think it's a devastating blow to the Eagles' backfield. It's a bit, not at all.
It could even be a blessing in disguise.
Surprisingly (and perhaps even cleverly), the Eagles did not deviate much from their strategy of multiple defeats with Ajayi. He has never had more than 51% offensive shots this year, including less than 40% in the two games in which he scored touchdowns. In fact, in their last three games together, Ajayi and teammate Wendell Smallwood made almost the same number of shots. Ajayi simply had more contacts in two of them.
Smallwood is one of two Eagles ball carriers who should work a lot in the absence of Ajayi. The other is Corey Clement, who is expected to return to Week 6 after missing two games due to a quad injury.
The timing is ideal for both guys, but especially for Smallwood. In four games with limited work, the third-year West Virginia player has turned out to be not only a physical runner but also a quality passcaster. In addition to his impressive 6.0 yard rushing average, Smallwood has had a 9.6-yard pass with at least three catches in each of his last three games. In addition, he has already scored four runs of more than 10 yards (one less than Ajayi) and four receptions of more than 10 yards (three more Ajayi), proving to be an explosive player that can be used in many ways.
Clement is equally effective, although he is not considered as powerful as Smallwood. In fewer games, Clement also has eight explosive games (four in the race, four receiving, as well as Smallwood) to go with an average of 4.1 yards on the floor and an average of 9.3 yards.
These guys are not bad, and their ability to play effectively in running games and passing games offers intriguing options to Eagles coaches. It would not be surprising at all to see these guys part with the semifinal workload until Darren Sproles returns. This includes work in the red zone, where Clement has 15 shots in three parts and Smallwood, 25 out of four.
If there is one advantage, it is that Smallwood has played more cliches near the goal line than Clement this year. Because of its hardness, it could be used a little more often in short distance or goal situations. It does not hurt either that he plays in the Eagles offensive over the last four weeks while Clement has had problems with his quad injury.
Smallwood is a 10% -owned CBS sports league and is the priority over Clement, who has already been featured in 63% of leagues and is therefore not as available as he is anyway. The potential of Smallwood is so great that it is a better asset than anyone else in terms of waiver in any respectable league at this stage.
There is one last thing to note: the Eagles have an aggressive mentality and off the field. We saw this when they acquired Ajayi during an exchange with the Dolphins during the last Halloween party. The team could do it again this fall before the league trade deadline.
ESPN rejected the idea that the Eagles are joining Pennsylvania in favor of the Steelers' "Veon Bell." It would be splashy, but also expensive in terms of salary and milking choices. However, it would not be totally shocking to see the Eagles acquiring someone else. The bigger the name, the more likely it is to break the values of Smallwood and Clement.
Here's the good news: Philadelphia plays a week against the Giants, so no one comes in to replace Smallwood and Clement for the moment. If they play well against a Giants unit that ranks 21st in the Fantasy points allowed to turn around, the team might be inclined to just roll with them and not add another body to mixed.
If that is the reality, Smallwood and Clement should play a fantastic role in Fantasy for the rest of the season.
