Tristan Beaudette had her daughters camping last weekend in Malibu Creek State Park while her wife was preparing to take an exam, reported KTLA. He did not return.
Beaudette, of Irvine, Calif., Was found fatally shot around 4:45 am Friday, according to the Los Angeles Times. His daughters, aged 4 and 2, were in the tent with him at the time, but were not injured.
In 2000, the Fresno Bee listed Beaudette as one of the valedictorians of the Edison High School Graduate class. He also competed for Computech Middle School at the Science Olympiad in 1997 and took first place in the bioprocessing laboratory, according to the Fresno Bee Archive.
Family and friends told CBS that Beaudette was a scientist for a pharmaceutical company, and his children were "his greatest pride and joy."
According to a GoFundMe account set up for the Beaudette family, he "was doing something that he loved in life, being outside with his two young daughters".
According to GoFundMe, Beaudette and his wife were preparing to move to the Bay Area for new jobs.
"And then everything was taken away, by a mortal shot in the middle of the night, in front of her two young girls," says the GoFundMe page. "It does not happen for a second that we are not dealing with the absurdity of this crime."
Sunday morning, the account had raised $ 17,165 on a goal of $ 25,000.
According to CBS, the authorities have no suspects or responsible in the case. State Park Superintendent Tony Hoffman told KTLA that the shooting had occurred in an area of the park with 63 campsites, probably occupied at the time of Beaudette's death.
Lieutenant Rodney Moore told the Los Angeles Times that the police believed that Beaudette had been shot in the tent while the children were present.
"We are working like a homicide at this stage," he told the newspaper.
The GoFundMe page of Beaudette's family described him as an "extraordinary father, husband, son, and brother."
"You have been admired by so many people for your dedication to your wife and your two daughters," said the page.
Malibu Creek State Park, in the Calabasas area of Los Angeles, has been used to film movies and television shows, including "MASH" and "Planet of the Apes."
