FDA: common fleas, tick medications can cause seizures in animals

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The US Food & Drug Administration warns pet owners and veterinarians that common pet medications and ticks can cause serious neurological problems in animals.

The alert includes drugs of the class of isoxazoline, such as Bravecto, Credelio, Nexgard and Simparica. Most drugs are sold as flavored chews.

"Isoxazoline-based products have been associated with undesirable neurological reactions, including muscle tremors, ataxia, and seizures in some dogs and cats," the FDA said in a press release. "Although most dogs and cats have not had neurological side effects, seizures can occur in animals with no history."

While these products can and have been used safely in the majority of dogs and cats, the FDA encourages pet owners to consult their veterinarian to review medical history and determine if a product of the class of isoxazolines is suitable to their animal.

Many products are available for the prevention and control of flea and tick infestations, the FDA said.

If your pet experiences side effects while using an isoxazoline – based product, consult your veterinarian first. The FDA also advises pet owners to report the incident to the drug manufacturers.
