The Food and Drug Administration wants to facilitate the sale of common nonprescription drugs.
The agency proposed new guidelines Tuesday for drug manufacturers who want to change drugs. In a statement, FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb said the agency was evaluating ways to make sure patients do not take inappropriate over-the-counter medications. This could include adding information about the packaging label and the offer of mobile apps to help people decide if a drug is right for them.
Manufacturers should conduct studies showing that these strategies allow consumers to choose a safe drug.
Many over-the-counter medications widely used originally were only available on prescription, including Claritin allergy treatment and Prilosec stomach burn remedies.
