Federal government investigates suspicious packages sent to Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama

The New York Times, citing two law enforcement officials, reported that the devices addressed to influential Democrats were similar to those found at the home of George Soros, a politically active billionaire and many outcast to his right.

Soros' home in Bedford, NY, is less than 15 km from the Clinton Residence. Clinton spokesman Nick Merrill said in a tweet that "nothing" sent to Clinton "was going home."

President Donald Trump has been informed of the packages and takes the situation "very seriously," a senior White House official told NBC News.

Lt. James Carroll of the New Castle Police Department told CNBC that his department had helped the FBI and the US Secret Service investigate the package sent to the Clintons, which was discovered last night.

In a tweet Wednesday morning, the New York branch of the FBI acknowledged the existence of the package sent to the Clinton, but said it would refuse to comment on the ongoing investigation.

An Obama spokeswoman declined to comment and referred CNBC to the secret services. Representatives of Hillary Clinton did not immediately respond to CNBC's requests for comment.

Clinton is currently in Florida to attend a fundraising event, NBC reported.
