Dirk and Jane Stolz own a deer reserve in Bayfield County and a deer farm in Washington County. They moved 23 deer from Washington County to the reserve last winter.
One of the remaining deer in Washington County tested positive for MDC in March. State agriculture officials have decided to quarantine the deer in Washington County and eliminate the herd in Bayfield County, where the disease has not yet been found. They killed 22 deer on the reservation in April; the 23rd deer is missing. The Stolz received $ 52,000 in federal money.
The 11-animal herd of Burton Buck Creek in Richland County was wiped out in August. The facility received $ 15,000 of public funds.
Wisconsin is home to 380 deer or elk farms. MDC has been found in 23 of these facilities since 2002. Fourteen have been depopulated, including all three this year.
