The Nevada State Athletic Commission plans to suspend Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor, UFC lightweight champions, as a result of their actions after the main fight at UFC 229, said Thursday at the UFC. ESPN Bob Bennett, Executive Director.
The commission will issue its suspensions on October 15 pending a hearing on October 24, when its president and his team will decide on the opportunity to suspend the fighters indefinitely. The two fighters will likely face sanctions for their actions inside the T-Mobile Arena on Saturday, with Nurmagomedov coming for the start of the fight and McGregor for attempting to jump the cage and join the Smash.
After submitting McGregor neck-and-neck in the fourth roundNurmagomedov began taunting and celebrating the octagon when he threw up his nose in the direction of McGregor's team. As the insults continued, Nurmagomedov jumped over the fence and tried to kick Dillion Danis into chaos. Then McGregor tried to cross the fence, but was punched before he could go out.
UFC President Dana White refused to place the title around Nurmagomedov's waist after McGregor was escorted out of the arena, saying it would have caused even more chaos. While McGregor was paid, the commission still retains Nurmagomedov's battle bag, while one of his teammates, Zubaira Tukhugov, had canceled his scheduled fight on Oct. 27 with Artem Lobov (a McGregor teammate).
Nurmagomedov has threatened to move away from the UFC if the company decides to release Tukhugov after the actions of Saturday.
