Following the success of the Broadway revival in 2015 The color Purple, the musical adaptation of Alice Walker's novel is preparing to move to the big screen.
A film version of the series is in its infancy, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Oprah Winfrey, Quincy Jones and Scott Sanders, the trio of producers behind the original production of 2005 and the recent revival, will team up again for the Warner Bros. project. Steven Spielberg, who directed the film of the same name in 1985 (which earned Winfrey an Oscar), joined them.
No word yet on a production timeline, casting or additional creative team, including a director or scriptwriter.
The musical, including a book by Marsha Norman and a score by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray, opened at Broadway Theater in December 2005. The following year, LaChanze won a Tony Award for her performance as Celie, a Black A woman who embarks on a journey of decades of self-acceptance and love despite a series of difficulties.
The role also led to a Tony for Cynthia Erivo in 2016 for the reduced staging, John Doyle-helmed (who also won the prize for the best rebirth of a musical). We can see it on the big screen this year Widows and Bad times at El Royale.
