The Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and the Florida Children's Hospital rank in the bottom half of the top 50 hospitals in several specialties, according to the ranking of the best children's hospitals 2018-2019, published Tuesday.

Like last year, Arnold Palmer has been ranked in five specialties. He ranked 36th in cardiology, losing two points from last year. He moved from 21st to 34th in diabetes care. He lost a place in orthopedics, ranking 34th. He also rose from 36th to 38th in pneumology. The hospital climbed from one point to the 44th in urology.

The Florida Hospital for Children is ranked 42nd in neonatology, the only specialty for which it has been ranked. The hospital was not included in the ranking last year.

To be included in the rankings, hospitals had to provide detailed data on their services and capabilities, according to U. News. Factors such as mortality and infection rates, clinical data and compliance with best practices were used to rank hospitals.

"By having access to the most comprehensive data available to supplement their pediatrician's advice, families are able to make more informed decisions about where to look for quality care for their children," said Ben Harder. in a press release.

The 12th annual report ranks the top 50 hospitals in 10 pediatric specialties, including cancer, cardiology, gastrointestinal surgery, neonatology and orthopedics.

A total of 189 hospitals were included in the ranking, including seven in Florida, including the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and the Florida Children's Hospital.

The rankings are a starting point for families. High-ranking hospitals are not always the best choice, says U.S. News.

"In a specialty, the hospital's performance is judged through a variety of conditions and procedures, so one hospital may outperform another in some of them, but the second could do better in some areas. In the pediatric orthopedic classifications, for example, a hospital might have a particularly busy spina bifida clinic but not treat complex fractures as effectively as another hospital could do, "according to US News. .

The report selected 10 hospitals as the best children's hospitals of the Boston Children's Hospital, the Cincinnati Children's Medical Center and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
