National carrier Finnair announced on Saturday afternoon that it had canceled flights AY 101 and AY 099, which had to leave respectively Helsinki and Hong Kong at 16:45 and 23:45.
The airline said the cancellations were due to typhoon Mangkhut, which hit the area with torrential rains and fierce winds. She is expected to hit the southeast coast of China on Sunday.
Other stranded flights include AY 102, which will leave Hong Kong for Helsinki on Sunday, and AY 5831, which will transport passengers from Hong Kong to Helsinki via Bangkok on Sunday, said the airline's communications department.
Finnair said it would inform passengers on Sunday if additional flights were canceled due to the storm. The carrier indicated that it had already informed the affected passengers of schedule changes via SMS and email.
Hong Kong officials have called on locals to prepare for the worst and urge them to stay inside. At 17:00 Finnish time on Saturday night, the Philippine authorities reported 14 deaths due to the storm.
