A fire ravaged several school buses in a Providence subdivision on Thursday night, causing five total vehicle losses and severely damaging two others, according to one official.
Providence firefighter Chief Kevin Jutras said the crews responded to a bus stop reserved for the first students, the 3 Ricom Way, located in a shopping area close to Highway 10 and the railroad. shortly after 19:30.
Upon arrival, at least one bus in a yard filled with dozens of vehicles was on fire, Jutras said.
According to Jutras, 500 gallons of water from an engine tank were used in the two minutes before the crew with fire extinguishers. There was a limited number of fire hydrants in the area, he said, and firefighters had to run about 900 feet of pipes to fight the fire, he said. .
Firefighters took about 20 minutes to extinguish the fire, but by that time five buses had been destroyed and two others damaged, he said.
The cause is still under investigation. About 30 firefighters responded to the fire and one of them suffered what Jutras called a minor injury. Jutras did not know the monetary damage caused by the fire.
