TEXAS – The County of Chambers Health Department confirmed that one patient had contracted West Nile virus, making it the first case in the county in 2018.
Health officials said the patient, who lives in Chambers County (west), had left the hospital after his treatment. The identity of the person will remain confidential.
"We are actively monitoring the situation and the Department of Public Health will continue its investigation," said Dr. Clay Brown, a local health authority in Chambers County.
The West Nile virus season extends from June to October, officials said.

Symptoms of the virus include:
- Stiff neck
- View problems
- Body tremors
- Mental confusion
- Memory loss
- The seizures
The State Department of Texas Health Services recommends the practice of "Four Ds":
- DEET: Use an insect repellent containing DEET, picaridine or lemon eucalyptus oil.
- Wear long-sleeved clothing and long pants when you are outside.
- Twilight / Dawn: Stay indoors during these times when mosquitoes are most active.
- Drain stagnant water where mosquitoes breed. Common breeding sites include old tires, flowerpots and clogged gutters.
