COUNTY OF DICKINSON – A four-year-old doe who died in Waucedah Township, Dickinson County, was tested positive for chronic wasting syndrome. This is the first deer found in the U.P. with the deadly disease of the nervous system that also affects moose and elk. The disease attacks the brain and eventually kills the animals that contract it. It's very contagious for animals.
John Pepin, Deputy Information Officer with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, said, "We have always known that CWED exists in wild deer, as well as deer-captive populations in Wisconsin." this use of the monitoring we are doing is what really alerted us about this deer, in which case we have an ongoing study on deer movement to help us better understand how deer move in this area.
The DNR has set up a test area where the deer has been discovered. They hope to test a minimum of 600 deer. Hunters can help by having their deer heads tested, you can keep the venison. Although deer checks are not mandatory, they could become so in the future.
MNR will take a number of steps including:
- Provide additional drop boxes for deer heads in the area, especially in convenient and busy locations.
- Provide disease control licenses to interested landowners who have more than 5 acres of land and are within 5 miles of the center of the surveillance zone.
- Following the previous one, let the deer bait continue for the rest of the year, reserving the deer feeding decision pending the results of the monitoring efforts.
- U.R. DNR ongoing The deer migration study will be adjusted to include the affected area within its boundaries. Deer will be stuck in the area to better understand deer movements.
