WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik – October 3, 2018) The first satellite of a possible fleet of miniature observation platforms in orbit around the globe that will provide intelligence to small military units has been delivered to a Specialized research unit of the US Department of Defense, announced Raytheon a press release Wednesday.

"Ground troops can not always have immediate access to larger military and commercial satellites," Raytheon Advanced Missile Systems Vice President Thomas Bussing said in the statement. "These smaller satellites, SeeMe, will be dedicated to soldiers and will provide them with real-time images of space, when they need it the most."

Raytheon has developed the program of DARPA (Advanced Defense Research Agency Pentagon), which plans to use automated missile production lines for the mass production of large numbers of tiny satellites and relatively inexpensive, explained the statement.

Finally, a SeeMe constellation can include several types of miniature satellites, each lasting one to five years, before being de-orbited and burned, leaving no space debris and causing no risk of re-entry, the statement said.

DARPA plans to launch the first SeeMe satellite on a Space X payload early next year, giving military users a chance to evaluate the unit's performance, according to the release.
