Director Todd Phillips shared the picture on Instagram with the legend "Arthur".

Director Todd Phillips shared the first look of star Joaquin Phoenix as Batman, The Joker, in the upcoming movie.

The photo, shared by Phillips on Instagram, features Phoenix in a green jacket and shirt with a delicate hairstyle and a hint of a smile on his face. Absent are the iconic clown makeup of the character and the green locks.

"Arthur," Phillips subtitled the photo, apparently confirming rumors that the real name of the character would be Arthur Fleck.

Joker is an independent film that follows the origin of Batman's most notorious enemy, rising from a comic comedy to a real criminal force of nature. The film is described as an "exploration of a man ignored by society [that] is not only a study of granular character, but also a broader warning. Phillips co-wrote the script with The fighter and The most beautiful hours scribe, Scott Silver.

Robert De Niro, Frances Conroy, Marc Maron and Atlanta and Deadpool 2 Zazie Beetz is also on the screen for the upcoming Warner Bros. movie, scheduled for release next October. Alec Baldwin was briefly attached to playing the role of Bruce Wayne's father in the film, but quickly gave up, saying that he was "no longer doing this movie" and tweeting that he had not "been hired to play in JOKER Todd Phillips as some Donald Trump misses. This does not happen."
