PHOENIX – The Redskins dominated the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. This may seem hyperbolic, but it is not exaggerated.
Washington doubled Arizona in total yards and they doubled Arizona overall in first attempts. In three quarters, the cardinals had five victories. Total.
The domination took two forms, and it came exactly as the Redskins brass hoped for this season when they rebuilt their team. The defensive line stopped Cardinals running back David Johnson and Washington's offensive line opened the door for more than 180 yards.
Adrian Peterson, the future Hall of Fame that was signed by the Redskins three weeks ago, has proven that he always has his ball fast. In the first period, when the match was still in question, Peterson hit the Cardinals' defenders. He set a physical and methodical pace that the Redskins would use to take a 21-0 lead and win the victory.
"It's one thing I want to bring to this team, be physical, at every game, relentlessly," said Peterson. "These are opportunities I had where I could drop my shoulder and set that tempo and show guys that this is what I will bring every time I touch it."
Peterson's plan worked.
He played the ball 26 times for 96 yards and a touchdown and added another 70 yards in the air. When the Redskins needed to beef up the ball in short distance situations, Peterson was the guy. Rob Kelley explained in the locker room after the match that the first half of Peterson had shown this team that she could bring down anybody. Morgan Moses said Peterson's freight train was in free fall.
"Our line of call set the tone early, especially with the way we coached football," quarterback Alex Washington said after the match.
And for Peterson, he wanted this wickedness to extend beyond the crime.
"You can see that it is spreading not only on the offensive side of the ball, but also on the defensive side," he said.
Once again, his plan worked.
Powered by Jonathan Allen, Daron Payne and Matt Ioannidis, the Redskins defender held Johnson just 37 yards in nine races. The cardinals did not offend anything in the first half.
An NFL football game lasts 60 minutes, 30 per half. In the first half of Sunday's game, the Redskins kept the ball for nearly 23 minutes. The Cardinals offense had less than 10 games in the second quarter. Think about that. The Redskins controlled the first half of this game. Completely. Fully. Totally.
Washington has passed its first-round picks of 2017 and 2018 on Alabama's defensive linemen. The idea was to stop the race.
On Sunday, it worked.
While the defensive line was to be rebuilt, the arrival of Adrian Peterson was not. He only landed in Washington because Derrius Guice was injured.
Sunday also worked.
"It's the goal of professional football, your ability to spin the ball, stop the race.And we get there, we have a long way to go.But I'm happy with how this game s & # "It's over," Redskins head coach Jay Gruden said after the game.
Basically, football is a simple game. Control the line of scrimmage, both attacking and defending, and the teams usually win.
This formula worked for Washington on Sunday. Do not forget the outstanding performances of Smith and Chris Thompson, as well as the re-emergence of Jordan Reed.
There were many outstanding performances. Quinton Dunbar also deserves praise.
In the end, however, the Redskins controlled the line of scrimmage. Their offensive line has bypassed the Cardinals' defensive line. And their young defensive line, rebuilt, roughed the Arizona race game.
This is a simple formula that can be reproduced.
In fact, for Peterson, things need to improve.
"There are some things I personally have to work on to improve my game. I've left a lot of yards in the field, and there's a good movie to watch," said the running back. "There have been missed holes, missed opportunities, it's happening, that's why you're watching, you're watching a movie, you're improving, and you're getting better for next week."
