EXTERNAL BANKS, N.C. (WAVY) – The American flag that won a national sequel while it was beating furiously during Hurricane Florence's winds is auctioned off.
Thousands of people watched Thursday a live broadcast of the private Frying Pan tower, off Cape Fear, North Carolina, where she documented the approach of the storm.
The flag was not sized for Florence, who left it ripped and torn. The tower itself survived the force of the hurricane, but the flag was beaten.
During a live chat Friday on the Frying Pan Tower Facebook page, owner Richard Neal said the flag would be resurfaced "respectfully and honorably" as soon as it would be possible to return to the tower to recover it. The plan is then to give it to the American Red Cross for auction and use the recipes for people in need.
The Frying Pan Tower is a Coast Guard lighthouse located 34 miles off the coast of the outer banks and turned into a bed and breakfast.
At one point on Thursday, the thread's fans seemed to come together to rename Old Glory "Kevin". Neal posted the following on social media:
If you followed the chat, it seems that someone decided to name our flag "Kevin". Well, so yes, Old Glory is Kevin. That's Paul, that's Nancy. That's Larry. That's Emily … Old Glory represents us all as Americans. Together we are America and we decide to take back, start over and sew up our lives in tatters after the passing storms of life! Let your actions show us all proud and together! Richard Neal
