NEW YORK —
The flags were lowered half-staffed on buildings in the state of New York and New York City to pay tribute to Senator Jose Peralta, who died suddenly at age 47.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York City Mayor's Office Bill de Blasio announced the tributes on Friday. They are Democrats, just like Peralta.
He died Wednesday night after being taken to the hospital.
Forensic scientists have not yet determined the cause of his death. Evelyn, his widow, said that he felt sick and that his condition suddenly became worse.
Peralta represented parts of Queens and was the first American of Dominican descent elected to the New York Senate. He served there for eight years after an additional eight years in the state assembly.
He lost a primary in September to Jessica Ramos. She takes office in January.
