Flash flood takes car to culvert, killing mother and 2-year-old daughter

A young mother and her 2-year-old daughter drowned in North Texas on Saturday morning after a sudden flood swept their car off the road and pushed into a culvert filled with water .

The mother's car stalled on a service road in Fort Worth when it was pushed by waves of water from other vehicles, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported. The midsize sedan floated in the culvert around 10 am local time, and in minutes it was completely filled with water, according to the report.

When the rescue agents arrived, it was too late.

"When we got here, the water was 30 feet deep and we could not go," said a spokesman for the fire department. The firefighters were recalled after the water had pulled out and the top of the vehicle was visible, the spokesman said.

"When we arrived, the water was 30 feet deep and we could not get there."

Rescuers found an elderly man at around 2:30 pm The report says that he drowned after his vehicle was submerged under water. No additional information has been published on the victims.

The tragedies occurred despite Friday's warnings from the Fort Worth Fire Department regarding flood conditions, and storms continued in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, the Dallas Morning News reported.

"With the potential for heavy rain, be prepared to deal with localized flooding …… If you drive and you encounter high tide, please #TurnAroundDontDrown," said a warning on Twitter .

The National Meteorological Service issued a flash warning which remained in force until 12:45.

The Fort Worth Fire Department expressed its condolences in a tweet on Saturday night and warned other drivers: "Turn Around, Do not Drown".
