FLORENCE UPDATE: Florence flips trees and drops electricity in Charlotte area

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – As tropical storm Florence begins to impact in the Charlotte area, we'll keep you posted on roads that are closed with fallen trees and power outages.

7:20 p.m.

Heavy rains reached Duke Energy's coal ash dump at Sutton Lake in Wilmington, the company said Saturday night.




6:45 p.m.

A tree fell on a car and hit a house on Shiloh Unity Road in Lancaster. The family ran to the back of the house when they heard the crash.

5:20 p.m.

The strong winds destroyed the roof of a Fort Mill gas station. This occurred at Gulf Station on Spratt Street at Highway 160.

5:10 p.m.

Authorities said the four lanes of Highway 521 at Charles Pettus Road in Lancaster County were blocked

5:05 p.m.

A fallen tree and power lines closed a road to Matthews.

Matthews police said Pleasant Plains at Fair Forest Drive is closed and traffic is diverted in the Brightmoor area.

15:30.

Low power lines and a tree closed Standard Street. Police are asking drivers to avoid the area.

Officials said no one was injured.

3:25 p.m.

Flood warnings were issued for Cabarrus and Rowan counties until 10:30 pm. Saturday.

3:20 p.m.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has reported responding to several tree declines in the area, but so far there have been no serious injuries.

3:15 p.m.

A tree descended on a house in Matthews. Channel 9 was informed that no one was injured when the tree fell on Hartis Lane.

Flash flood alerts were issued for Anson, Union, Richmond and Stanly counties until 10:15 pm. Saturday

1:45 p.m.

The crews of Channel 9 arrived on the scene of a large tree in a house in the Myers Park neighborhood.




The owner said the tree on Bucknell Avenue fell last night while the family was out of town. He told Channel 9 that a neighbor heard a big boom and called him to let him know what had happened.

Nobody was hurt.

1:15 p.m.

Duke Energy announces 7,415 customers without electricity in Mecklenburg County

A big tree crashed on Howard Road, in the Derita neighborhood north of Charlotte.

National Highway 1228 (White Store Road) is closed in both directions in Anson County, near Peachland, due to the fall of a tree.

6:30 in the morning.

The 1608 National Road (Boyd Lake Road) is closed in both directions in Richmond County due to the fall of power lines and trees.

6 am

The exit lanes on South Tryon Street, Southampton Road, are closed due to a power outage. Duke Power is working on the problem. The entrance ways remain open.

5:20 p.m.

Providence Road West, at Marvin Road, is closed in both directions due to power line failure. The tree crashed around 19 hours. Friday.

The police have barricades in place to prevent traffic from circulating on the lines.

There are more than 3,300 Duke Energy customers without electricity in Mecklenburg County.

5:10 p.m.

Ford Road Nations is closed in both directions, just north of Archdale Drive (near the Burger King) due to the presence of power lines in the roadway. The lines are lowered after being touched by a tree branch.

3:45 p.m.

A large tree fell in the 2300 block of Margaret Wallace Road in southeastern Charlotte. The road is closed from St. Peters Lane to Whitfield Drive.

The tree dropped a power line and traffic lights came out on Highway 74 from Krefeld Drive to Harris Boulevard and on Margaret Wallace Road from Independence Boulevard to Idlewild Road.

Crews have said that it will be at least 7 hours before everything is settled.
