The state of Florida is suing the two largest drugstore chains in the United States, Walgreens and CVS, for allegedly helping to ease the nationwide opioid epidemic.
"We will continue to pursue companies that have played a role in creating the opioid crisis," said Attorney General Pam Bondi at the announcement of the trial. "Thousands of Floridians have suffered the actions of the accused."
On Friday, Bondi filed a lawsuit alleging that both channels had sold too many opioids and did not adequately control illegal drug sales.
It is also Insys Therapeutics, Inc., which, according to the filing, would have given discounts to doctors for prescribing its opioid product, Subsys.
The three companies have been associated with a broader lawsuit against various opioid providers.
A spokesman for CVS told The New York Daily News that the lawsuit was "baseless".
"In recent years, CVS has taken many steps to strengthen existing safeguards to combat the opioid epidemic in the country," said spokesman Mike DeAngelis.
Walgreens told The Hill that he was not commenting on the pending lawsuits.
